With clouded leopard's death, Zoo's Asia Trail loses its most handsome cat

The National Zoo announced that its 13-year-old male clouded leopard, Tai, was euthanized November 24 after veterinarians discovered malignant tumors in his chest. Clouded leopards are classified as “vulnerable,” which means they “are facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.”

The median life expectancy of a male clouded leopard in human care is about seven years. So while Tai lived a relatively long life, I will miss his gorgeous fur, striking eyes, and love of meatballs. So long, Tai!

On the National Zoo’s Asia Trail, cat lovers can still find fishing cats and Tai’s lovely (but more elusive) partner, Mook.
